SCRANTON, Pa. - A first half goal by junior Michael Bergen (Newtown, Pa./Pennington School) proved to be the difference, as the University of Scranton men's soccer team captured a hard fought 1-0 victory over Centenary on Sunday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
With the win, the Royals moved to 2-2 overall on the year, while Centenary fell to 1-3 with the loss.
Bergen's eventual game-winner came in the 12th minute off a steal, as the junior's shot from 15 yards out went just over the head of Centenary goalie Jesse Goleman and into the right side of the net to give the Royals the early one-score edge.
The goal for Bergen was his second in as many matches for Scranton, and was the sixth of his career.
The score by Bergen capped a dominating first half by the Royals, in which they outshot Centenary by a 15-4 margin in the period.
Clinging to the 1-0 lead entering the second half, Scranton used a strong defensive effort to put the match away. After only managing four shots in the first 45 minutes, Centenary fired six in the last 45, only to be denied by the Scranton back line each time.
Overall, Scranton ended the match holding large edges on total shots (22-10) and corner kicks (9-1) over Centenary.
In goal, junior Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) and sophomore Laureano Pereyra (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) combined for the shutout win, each spending time in net for a half, apiece.
The University of Scranton men's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, as they travel to Misericordia for another out-of-conference tilt. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
