SCRANTON, Pa. - A goal by senior Krista Osborne (Blue Bell, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy) with 12 minutes left in regulation proved to be the difference, as the University of Scranton field hockey team scored twice in the second half to race past Misericordia on Wednesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field, 3-2.
With the win, the Royals remained unbeaten on the season at 5-0, while Misericordia fell to 2-3 overall with the defeat.
In the first half, Misericordia was able to get on the board first, scoring in the 11th minute to take an early 1-0 lead on the Royals. It took Scranton nearly all of the first half to get their offense going, but once the Royals started moving downhill on their end of the field, they wouldn't stop.
In the 31st minute, Scranton finally scored the equalizer, as senior Lara Haab (Gladwyne, Pa./Country Day School Sacred Heart) tallied her second goal of the season off an assist from freshman Elizabeth Tolley (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) to knot the game up at 1-1.
However, Misericordia was able to strike last before the end of the half, scoring in the 33rd minute to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead entering intermission.
But, in the second half, Scranton began to dominate play on both ends.
Finally, in the 52nd minute, Scranton tied the game back up, as senior Alyssa Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) scored her sixth goal of the season to make it a 2-2 contest. Fellow senior Jessica Pankey (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) was credited with an assist on the game-tying goal.
Just over five minutes later, freshman Katherine McVeagh (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) found Osborne who finished off an attack to give the Royals their first lead of the afternoon at 3-2. The lead stood up over the final 12 minutes, as Scranton held a huge 9-1 advantage on shots in the second half over Misericordia to finish off the victory.
Overall, Scranton outshot Misericordia 14-3 in the victory and held a decisive 13-7 edge on penalty corners.
For Osborne, it was her fifth game-winning goal of her career, as she is now seventh all-time in program history in total career points (70) and tied for eighth in career goals (29).
Elsewhere, Whitman's hot start to the year had catapulted her to ninth all-time in career goals (28) and in a tie for 11th in career points with 59 (28 goals, three assists)
The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Saturday, taking on Arcadia in another out-of-conference match at Fitzpatrick Field. Things get underway at 1 p.m.
