TOWSON, Md. - Junior forward Alexix Roman (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) led four double-digit scorers with 17 points, as the seventh-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team made quick work of host Goucher on Saturday afternoon, throttling the host Gophers, 72-37, in Landmark Conference action.
With the win, the Lady Royals remained unbeaten at 15-0 overall, 5-0 in the Landmark. The 15-0 start for Scranton is now the second best in program history and is only second to the 1994-95 team, who started 24-0 before dropping their final two games of the season.
Goucher fell to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in the Landmark with the loss.
In the win, Scranton essentially put Goucher away in the first quarter, as they opened up a 17-0 lead over the first eight minutes of action to eventually take a 19-3 lead after the opening period. From there, the Lady Royals rolled for the remainder of the half, and went into the locker room for halftime up 44-11.
When the dust settled after the final 20 minutes of the second half, Scranton had notched a 35-point victory, their biggest of the year to date. It is also Scranton's 11th win a row by double-figures, as the last opponent to come nine points of the Lady Royals at the end of a game was Cabrini on Nov. 24 (a 62-56 win).
Overall, Roman did not miss a shot from the floor in the win (7-of-7) and also did not miss a free throw (3-of-3) in her 17-point afternoon. Roman, who also pulled down six rebounds in the win, scored in double-figures in a game for the 14th time in 15 contests for the season.
Elsewhere, junior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) went into double-figures again , scoring 12 points (on 5-of-6 shooting), while adding five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Payonk has now scored in double-figures in 11 straight games.
Sophomore guard Katie O'Reilly (Montville, N.J./Montville) came off the bench to score 11 points (matching a career-high) and senior guard Jaclyn Gantz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) added 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers on the day for Scranton.
The University of Scranton women's basketball team will now be idle for a week, returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 at home against Catholic. The Landmark Conference showdown gets underway at 4 p.m. inside the John Long Center.
