WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team jumped out to a big lead before halftime and cruised to a 14-9 victory over King's at sun-splashed McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Scranton (4-1) led 4-1 after a period and 9-1 late in the second half en route to its third straight win. Junior attackman Jake Haimson (Montville, N.J./Montville) led the way with four goals, freshman attackman Matt Haemmerle (Hillsdale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) had two goals and two assists, and senior midfielder Brad Elkin (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) scored twice and had an assist, and sophomore attackmen Matt Carfaro (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) and Patrick O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) had two goals each.
Haimson, who now has a team-high 12 goals this season, scored twice in each of the first two periods as Scranton built that 9-1 lead, and Haemmerle had a goal in each period. The Royals put the game away when O'Rourke scored twice in the final minute of the third period for a 12-5 lead.
Senior midfielder Nicholas Swift (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a goal and two assists, junior midfielder John Sheridan (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) added a goal and an assist, and senior midfielder Nick Mullery (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) had two assists.
Scranton held a commanding 44-19 edge in shots and caused 21 turnovers. The Royals were 14-for-15 in clear attempts while holding King's (1-3) to just 12-for-20.
Scranton won 16 of 27 faceoffs, led by 13 wins from sophomore midfielder Adam Drury (Chatham, N.J./Chatham). Drury and Elkin led the Royals with four ground balls each, and Sheridan and senior defender Chris Carfaro (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) had two caused turnovers each.
Scranton is back in action on Saturday when the Royals travel to Danbury, Conn. to take on Western Connecticut State at noon.
