Junior midfielder Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) had three goals and an assist, and The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team put forth a strong defensive effort in a 6-5 victory over Oneonta State at chilly Fitzpatrick Field on Wednesday.

Kerr had a pair of first-half goals as the Royals (6-4) took a 3-1 lead into halftime. She assisted on a goal early in the second half and later added what proved to be the game-winning goal with 13:27 to play.

Scranton won its third straight largely on the strength of strong defense, forcing 25 turnovers, stopping Oneonta State (3-6) on seven of 23 clear attempts and winning eight of the 13 draw controls in the game.

Junior goalkeeper Marne Rossetti (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) finished with seven saves to lead the defensive effort. Senior midfielder Fiona Keelan (New Rochelle, N.Y./Mamaroneck) had two caused turnovers, three ground balls and a draw control, sophomore midfielder Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) finished with five draw controls and two ground balls, and senior defender Bridget Gallaher (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) had a team-high six ground balls.

Senior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) finished with two goals and four ground balls, freshman midfielder Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) had a goal and freshman attacker Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) added an assist.

Temperatures in the low 30s combined with a frigid breeze made possession critical as the teams combined for 53 turnovers. Despite all the changes of possessions, the teams finished with 17 shots each. The Royals' defense in the first half turned out to be key, holding the Red Dragons to just one goal on six shots in the opening half hour.

Scranton will be back in action on Saturday, April 9, when the Royals travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. to take on Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference game at 1 p.m.
