HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Three different University of Scranton men's soccer players scored goals, as the Royals defense not only held Juniata off the scoreboard but allowed just one shot in 90 minutes of play in a dominating 3-0 win on the road in Landmark Conference action on Saturday.
With the victory, Scranton improved to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the Landmark Conference, while Juniata fell to 1-10-3 and 0-4-1 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In the opening frame of the match, the Royals came out from the opening whistle and fired away on the Juniata defense, eventually ending the half outshooting the host Eagles, 13-0.
Only one of those shots, however, got past Juniata goalie Logan Tackett, as senior Connor Casey (Hatfield, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) scored in the 18th minute off an assist from sophomore Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) to give the Royals a 1-0 lead that would stand into the locker room for intermission.
For Casey, it was his sixth goal of the 2017 season and his fourth eventual game-winner of the year. For his career, Casey now has scored 15 goals, eight of which have been game-winners.
Up 1-0 entering the second half, Scranton looked to put the match away early, but could not, as five shots by the Royals could not find the back of the net.
But, in the 71st minute, Scranton put away Juniata for the day, as freshman Jarred Corbett (Wenonah, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) scored off a Roberts assist, giving the Royals a 2-0 lead. For Corbett, it was his first career goal, as well.
In the 81st minute, senior Tim McGovern (Merrick, N.Y./Chaminade) added another goal for Scranton for good measure, as the score off an assist from sophomore Christian Savino (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) put the Royals up three goals late. For McGovern, it was his second goal of the 2017 season and career.
From there, the Royals coasted, as Juniata finally got their first and only shot off in the contest in the 88th minute. The shot, however, went high, as Scranton notched their fourth shutout win of the year in dominating fashion.
Overall, the Royals outshot the Eagles by a staggering 23-1 margin, while holding a 10-2 edge in corner kicks, as well.
The University of Scranton men's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Elmira for a non-conference match-up. Action gets underway at 3 p.m.
