JESSUP, Pa. - The University of Scranton softball team fell in a pair of Landmark Conference games at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex to Catholic on Thursday. The Royals dropped a 3-1 decision in eight innings in game one, before falling, 7-2, in game two.
With the losses, Scranton fell to 12-11 overall and 2-6 in the Landmark Conference, while Catholic improved to 18-10 and 5-3 in the Landmark with the doubleheader sweep.
In game one, both starting pitchers - Scranton junior Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) and Catholic's Kelly Lynch - tossed great games, as each allowed only six hits, apiece, on the afternoon.
Scranton cracked a scoreless tie in the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning, as freshman pinch runner Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) scored on a throwing error to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Catholic, however, countered the run in the top of the sixth, plating a single run to tie the game at 1-1.
That 1-1 score held over the next inning and a half, sending the game to extras. In the top of the eight, Catholic's Megan Colline hit an eventual game-winning two-RBI double with two outs, giving the Cardinals a two-run lead into the bottom of the frame.
In the bottom of the eighth, Scranton went down in order, as Catholic came-from-behind to take the first game by two.
Overall in game one, both freshman Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and senior Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) went 2-for-4, while senior Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) went 2-for-3. Rentzheimer took the hard luck loss in game one, moving to 8-5 overall on the year.
In game two, Catholic jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Scranton in the top of the third and never looked back, rolling to a five-run victory.
Overall, Zinn was 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two, while senior Angelica Titor (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) scored both of Scranton's runs in the contest.
In the circle, freshman Caitlin Long (Ho Ho Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) was handed the loss after allowing seven runs (three of which were earned) in four innings of work (moving to 2-3 overall on the year).
The Royals will now be off for the weekend, returning to action on Tuesday when they host Wilkes in a non-conference doubleheader in Jessup. The games, which will serve as the programs Strike Out Cancer games, begin at 5 p.m.
