WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The University of Scranton softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on the road at King's on Monday, taking game one, 2-1, before falling in game two, 12-4, in a game that was called in the sixth inning due to darkness.
With the spilt, Scranton moved to 8-7 overall on the year, while King's went to 7-7 with the result.
The first game of the day was a pitchers duel between Scranton junior starter Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) and King's pitcher Kayla Paszek, in which Rentzheimer came out on top to push her record on the year to 6-3 overall.
At the plate, Scranton was able to take an early 1-0 lead in the contest in the top of the first, as senior Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) knocked home freshman Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) on an RBI single.
The Royals extended the lead out to 2-0 in the fifth, as pinch runner Natalie Dominguez (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) scored on a fielders choice.
The 2-0 lead was all the run support Rentzhimer needed in the win, as she tossed another complete game, allowing just a single run in the bottom of the fifth. Rentzheimer, who allowed six hits, forced King's to hit into a double play to finish off the win for Scranton in the seventh, as well.
Overall, Kiefer had a big game one for Scranton, going 3-for-3.
In the second game, Scranton was able to leap out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning, but King's exploded for six runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to pull away from the Royals before the game was called due to darkness.
The University of Scranton softball team returns to action on Friday, hosting their 2017 home opener at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex against Cazenovia. The non-conference doubleheader gets underway at 4 p.m.
