JESSUP, Pa. -- Visiting Susquehanna took a pair of games from the University of Scranton softball team on Sunday at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex, winning game one of a Landmark Conference doubleheader, 3-1, before holding off a Scranton comeback bid in game two to win, 6-5.
With the losses, Scranton dropped to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the Landmark Conference, while Susquehanna improved to 14-8 and 4-2 in the Landmark with the victory.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Scranton offense couldn't muster much against Susquehanna starter Jamie Fesinstine, as the Royals scored their lone run of the contest in the fourth inning. The visiting River Hawks plated single runs in the first, third and seventh innings to take the first game by two.
Overall, senior Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the first game, while fellow senior Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) also went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the fourth. In the circle, junior Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) suffered the defeat to go to 6-4 overall on the season.
The second game of the day saw Susquehanna once again leap out to an early lead, as the River Hawks went up 5-1 on the Royals entering the fifth inning.
But there, Scranton scored a pair of runs on a Susquehanna fielding error, slicing the Susquehanna lead down to 5-3 entering the sixth inning.
After a scoreless sixth, Susquehanna plated what turned out to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning, grabbing a 6-3 lead entering the bottom half of the seventh. But, there, Scranton would not go away quietly.
With two outs and a runners on the corners, Stricker came up and kept the Royals alive with an RBI single. After a single by freshman Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) loaded the bases, senior Angelica Titor (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) was hit by a pitch, cutting the Susquehanna lead down to a single run in the process.
But, the Scranton rally ended there, as Fesinstine came on in the frame to try to record a save and did just that, forcing a ground out to extinguish the threat and win the second game for the River Hawks in the process.
Overall in game two, senior Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and DeSarno each went 2-for-4 to lead the Royals at the plate, with DeSarno collecting an RBI. In the circle, senior Emily Simon (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) was credited with the loss, falling to 1-3 overall on the year with the defeat.
The University of Scranton softball team returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Cazenovia in a non-conference doubleheader at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex. First pitch for game one is set for 4 p.m.
