WILKES-BARRE TWP. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team scored six straight second-half goals to pull away en route to a 14-7 victory over King's on Tuesday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The Royals held a 7-4 lead with eight minutes to go in the third period before running off six straight goals to turn the game into a route. Senior attackman Patrick O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) got the run started with a goal with 7:47 left in the period. Senior attackman Matt Carfaro (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) highlighted the run with back-to-back goals 22 seconds apart, the second coming with one second left in the period.
Junior attackman Tim Dolan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) led the Royals' attack with four goals. Carfaro finished with two goals and two assists, and sophomore midfielders Michael Elefonte (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and Joe Hill (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) both had two goals and an assist.
Scranton (5-2) also received a goal and two assists from sophomore attackman Quinn Killeen (Berkeley Heights, N.J./New Providence), and senior midfielder Brendan McLaughlin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and sophomore Kieran Fallon (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) each had an assist.
Junior midfielder Adam Maiale (Blue Bell, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) had a big game on the defensive end, finishing with nine caused turnovers and seven ground balls, both team highs. Freshman midfielder Matt Thermann (Spring Lake, N.J./Manasquan) went 15-for-20 in the faceoff circle and collected six ground balls.
The Royals ran up a 41-21 edge in shots and were successful on 14 of 15 clear attempts. They had a slim 39-35 edge in ground balls and turned the ball over 19 times compared to 24 by King's (1-2).
The men's lacrosse team will return to action on Monday, March 12, when the Royals take on Hampden-Sydney at 4 p.m. in Hampden-Sydney, Va.
