ONEONTA, N.Y. – Oneonta State built a 14-6 lead with 7:20 left in regulation and held off a furious comeback bid by The University of Scranton on Wednesday to defeat the Royals 14-11 in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) led all players with four goals in the game while Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) netted a hat trick in the loss for Scranton, which fell to 6-6 on the season with the setback.
Gallo scored the first goal of Wednesday's game after just 34 seconds had elapsed, but Oneonta (6-4-1) answered with the next six goals to open up a 6-1 advantage with just over 10 minutes remaining in the opening half. The Royals and Red Dragons traded goals over the final 9:40 of the period, giving the hosts an 8-3 advantage at halftime.
Gallo netted the first two markers of the second half to bring Scranton to within three goals at 8-5, but tallied five of the next six goals to open up a 14-6 cushion with 7:20 showing on the clock. The Royals would not go quietly, storming back with five goals before time ran out on their comeback bid.
Kaitlyn Murphy (Somers, N.Y./North Salem) and Shannon Warburton (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had a goal and an assist for Scranton while Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) also scored in the loss.
Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) dished out two assists to go along with a game-high nine draw controls.
Henson led all players with five caused turnovers on the day while tying for a game-high with three ground balls.
Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) made four saves for the Royals, who held a 31-25 advantage in shots for the game while doubling up the Red Dragons in draw controls, 18-9.
Oneonta claimed a 26-14 edge in ground balls while committing 22 turnovers to 25 for Scranton.
The visitors went 12-of-16 on clearing attempts while the Red Dragons were 17-of-26 on their clears.
Scranton will resume Landmark Conference play on Saturday afternoon as it hosts Elizabethtown at 1:00 p.m. on Fitzpatrick Field.
