SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton field hockey team (4-3) mounted a late comeback bid, but fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the Marywood Pacers (4-3) on Tuesday night at Marywood.
The Royals saw their winning streak come to an end at four games.
Marywood opened the scoring 2:20 into the contest as Jenna Dickey gave the Pacers the lead with a shot off a penalty corner. Lindsey Gladden added to the lead with an unassisted goal in the early stages of the second quarter to make it a 2-0 game. Scranton held a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but was unable to break through against Marywood goalie Kerri Mountz for the time being.
The Pacers added a third goal with 8:57 to play in the third quarter, but the Royals would start their comeback effort just 46 seconds later as sophomore Amelia Sharp (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) was awarded a penalty stroke and buried a shot to cut the lead to 3-1. The goal was Sharp's second of the season. Scranton had four shots over the remainder of the quarter, but the score held at 3-1 heading into the fourth. Junior Sheila Newby (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) took a penalty corner with 9:10 to play and fed a pass to senior Caroline Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) who found the back of the net to bring the Royals within a goal at 3-2. However, Scranton was unable to draw any closer despite a couple of promising opportunities in the final five plus minutes. Marywood nearly extended the lead, but senior goalie Claire McAllister (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) made a couple of key saves down the stretch.
The goal was the second of Mullen's career after she also scored at Goucher on Sept. 29, 2018.
The Royals held a 14-8 advantage in shots led by three apiece from senior Gracie McClatchy (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and sophomore Allie Benadon (Hillsborough, N.J.) and earned 11 penalty corners on the night. McAllister tallied three saves in net for head coach Colleen Moyer's squad, while Mountz had seven saves to pace Marywood.
Scranton will have a week off before hosting Wilkes on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at Weiss Field.
