Wrestling, Russomano Make History in Convincing Win over Alfred State

SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton wrestling team made history on Saturday, as the Royals captured their 16th win of the 2019-20 season with a dominating 44-3 victory over Alfred State.

With the win, the 2019-20 Royals (now 16-7 overall) are now the winningest team in a season in program history, passing the mark set by the 2016-17 Scranton team that finished 15-4. 

Also, head coach Al Russomano pushed his career record to 94-132, making him the winningest coach in program history in terms of percentage (.416) passing John Hopkins' career mark of .413.

Here are some highlights on the day for Scranton, as the Royals dropped just one bout all afternoon.

  • Three Royals won their bouts by pinfall. First, freshman Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) did so at 141 pounds in 1:31, while junior William Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) did the same at 174 in 2:17. The last Royal to win by pinfall was junior Kiel Pechko (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) at 197 pounds in 1:05.

  • Elsewhere, senior T.J. Conlon (Long Branch, N.J/Long Branch) at 165 pounds and sophomore Aidan McNally (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) at 174 pounds won by technical fall. Conlon won his match by a 16-0 score, while McNally was victorious, 17-1.

  • The other Scranton victories on the day came by either decision or forfeit. First, at 133 pounds, sophomore Matthew Murawski (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley - Old Tappan) captured an 11-6 win, while junior Kyle Shaffer (Mahwah, N.J/Mahwah) edged his opponent at 157 pounds, 3-2.

  • In the final bout of the day, sophomore heavyweight John Murphy (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) used a late takedown in the third period to take a 3-1 win. 

  • The day began for Scranton at 125 pounds, where freshman Michael Garcia (Verona, N.J/Verona) collected a win by forfeit. In exhibition action, freshman Dante Simeti (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (by pinfall in 59 seconds) and sophomore Stephen Murphy (Caldwell, N.J/James Caldwell) (by decision, 11-8) also collected victories.

The University of Scranton wrestling team returns to action on Sunday, February 9 when they host Wilkes in their 2019-20 home season finale in the John Long Center. Action gets underway at 12 p.m.
