ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The 17th-ranked University of Scranton women's soccer team rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits to earn a 2-2 draw at Elizabethtown in Landmark Conference action on Saturday.
The Royals (14-0-1, 6-0-1) saw their 14-game unbeaten streak to start the season come to an end. It marked the best start to a season in program history. While the historic run came to an end, the draw did not affect Scranton's postseason plans, as the Royals enter next week's Landmark Conference playoffs as the top seed and will host fourth-seeded Moravian in a semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at Weiss Field.
Sophomore forward Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) scored in the 79th minute to earn the draw. She scored the equalizer just 11 seconds after Elizabethtown (7-6-2, 4-1-1 Landmark) had scored to take a 2-1 lead.
The Royals rallied from an early 1-0 deficit when sophomore midfielder Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored in the 23rd minute.
Healy now has seven goals, second most on the team, to give her a team-high 19 points. Haggerty's goal was her fourth of the season and she is third on the team with 11 points.
Scranton held a commanding 28-8 edge in shots, including 19-5 in shots on goal. The Royals also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
When the Royals begin the Landmark Conference playoffs on Wednesday, the Royals will be seeking their eighth Landmark Conference title and 23rd conference title overall. They are also seeking their 19th NCAA Tournament appearance and their fifth straight. Scranton is currently ranked first in Region V in the NCAA regional rankings.
