SCRANTON - Three different players scored goals and The University of Scranton women's soccer team's defense shut out another opponent, as the Royals blanked visiting Farmingdale State, 3-0, on Tuesday night at Weiss Field.
With the win, the Royals, who moved to 22nd in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division III Top 25 poll earlier today, remain unbeaten and untied at 10-0-0. It continues an incredible run to start the season for Scranton, as the Royals are 10-0-0 to begin a campaign for the first time in the history of the program.
Farmingdale State dropped to 6-5-0 with the loss.
From the opening kick on Tuesday night, the Royals were the aggressor on offense, keeping the ball in their attacking end for seemingly the entire match.
After missing out on a few scoring chances early, the Royals finally broke a scoreless tie in the 25th minute, as senior and defending Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week Hope Drewes (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) got into the act on offense, heading in her first goal of the 2021 season (and third of her career) to give Scranton the early 1-0 edge. Senior Isabella DiBenedetto (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) was credited with an assist on the play, as well, her second in as many games for the Royals.
The 1-0 lead held for Scranton through the rest of the first half and into intermission, as the Royals held a sizable margin on shots (7-2) and corners (5-0) in the first 45 minutes of play.
After intermission, Scranton continued to be aggressive on offense and, in the 59th minute, essentially put the match away. There, senior Steph Lowrey (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) broke free (after a nice pass from junior Teresa Hegarty (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy)) from the Farmingdale State defense and finished a chance from about five yards out to give the Royals an insurmountable 2-0 lead. The goal was the second of the season for Lowrey and the 11th of her career at Scranton, while Hegarty notched her first assist of the year on the play.
The last tally of the night came late in regulation (the 84th minute) as sophomore Claire Mulholland (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) scored her third goal of the year off an assist from fellow sophomore Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee), to give the Royals a 3-0 edge late.
This lead was more than enough for the Scranton defense to work with, as the Royals once again blanked an opponent.
It marked the eighth time in 10 games that Scranton has shut out an opponent on the year. Earning the shut out victory for Scranton in net was senior Amanda Steinberg (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) who made five saves on the evening.
Overall, Scranton outshot Farmingdale State by a 17-8 margin, while holding a 10-0 edge on corner kicks.
The University of Scranton women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, diving back into Landmark Conference play at Goucher. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
