Fast Start Leads Men's Soccer Past Goucher, 2-1

Box Score

TOWSON, Md. – The University of Scranton men's soccer team (4-3-3, 1-0-2 Landmark) scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and held on for a 2-1 win over the Goucher Gophers (4-7-2, 1-2 Landmark) in Landmark Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field in Towson.

The Royals have now won five straight meetings against Goucher dating back to the 2016 season.

In the fifth minute, freshman Sean Quin (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) gathered the ball down the sideline and served a ball into the box where classmate Adam Havens (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) was able to head it home for a 1-0 lead.  Just over two minutes later, Quin once again delivered a ball into the box and this time around it was senior Jake Nubbemeyer (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) who beat Goucher goalie Jeff Castro with a header to extend the lead to 2-0. Scranton had a couple more chances later in the first half, but Castro made two saves to keep the game at 2-0 for the time being as the visitors held a 6-3 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes.

The goal was Havens' first of the year and Nubbemeyer's second.

Castro added consecutive saves on attempts from Havens and junior Christian Arcos (Bayonne, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) in the 53rd minute, while Royals senior goalie Jake Hodlofski (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) made a save of his own on the other end shortly after. Goucher was able to get on the board in the 75th minute as Adrian Mubiru took a feed from Drew List and cut the lead to 2-1. Hodlofski and the Royals defense rose to the occasion in the final 15 minutes as the Gophers managed just three shots while trailing by a goal and in the 89th minute, Hodlofski turned away a shot by Ali Kazim Nakhid to preserve the victory for Scranton.

Scranton held a 13-10 shot advantage on the afternoon led by three from Arcos and three different players who tallied two apiece.

Hodlofski made three saves in the win for the Royals, while Castro recorded seven saves in the setback for the Gophers.

The game was a physical affair that featured a combined 28 fouls and five yellow cards between the two sides.

The Royals wrap up their longest road trip of the season with a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night at Ursinus. Action will get underway at 7:30 p.m.
