Field Hockey Rolls Past Goucher to Remain Perfect

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – Sophomore Bridget Abraldes (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) notched her second consecutive hat trick and The University of Scranton field hockey team (11-0, 3-0 Landmark) scored its most goals since 2015 in a 9-0 win over the Goucher Gophers (1-9, 0-3 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.

The nine goals were the most the Royals have scored since a 9-2 win at Moravian on Oct. 25, 2015.

Scranton was receiving the most votes (101) among the others receiving votes category in the most recent Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll that was released earlier in the week.

Abraldes also registered a hat trick in a 7-0 win at Wilkes on Wednesday.

The Holbrook, N.Y., native opened the scoring in the third minute as she collected a loose ball in front of the cage and beat Gophers goalie Devin Brashear to make it a 1-0 game. Scranton would strike twice more in the next five plus minutes as senior Molly Sheehan (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) took a feed from sophomore Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) for her second goal of the season and Abraldes notched her second of the day in the eighth minute. In the second quarter, Redding got behind the defense for a breakaway and scored her 10th goal of the season, while senior Shannon Broderick (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) scored in the final minute of the period to extend the lead to 5-0 at halftime.

Abraldes finished the hat trick in the 48th minute and goals from junior Breanne Dolphin (Pearl River, N.Y.), sophomore Molly Gerasci (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and senior Madison Nord (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) rounded out the scoring on the day for the Royals. The goals for the latter trio were the first of their respective careers at The University.

Head coach Colleen Moyer's squad held a 31-0 shot advantage on the afternoon led by eight attempts from Redding.

Redding added three assists in the win to go along with her afore-mentioned 10th goal of the season.

In goal for the Royals, junior Clare Maguire (Oreland, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) played the first three quarters and freshman Gianna Travia (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) played the fourth quarter to combine on the shutout. As a team, Scranton has allowed just one goal on the season and has recorded 10 shutouts.

Maguire leads all of Division III in both goals against average (0.13) and save percentage (.969).

Julia Foster tallied five saves in 38 minutes of action for Goucher.

The University of Scranton field hockey team looks to remain unbeaten as they host Drew in a Landmark Conference matchup on Wednesday night at Weiss Field. Action will get underway at 7 p.m.
