Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. – Senior Allie Benadon (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) scored the game-winning goal 1:45 into overtime and The University of Scranton field hockey team (2-0) picked up a 1-0 overtime victory over the Arcadia Knights (1-3) on Saturday afternoon at Jean Lenox West Field in Glenside, Pa.
Benadon lifted a shot from the top of the circle into the top left corner of the cage following a penalty corner from senior Shaelin de Wit (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh).
The Royals have now won six straight meetings in the series and lead the all-time series by an 8-2 margin.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first quarter and Scranton had a few chances towards the end of the quarter, but were unable to find the back of the cage for the time being. In the later stages of the second quarter, junior goalie Clare Maguire (Oreland, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) made consecutive saves on attempts from Arcadia's Regan Sammons and Morganne Dee to keep the game scoreless headed into the halftime break.
It was Scranton's turn to apply the pressure offensively in the third quarter as the Knights' Gracie Fenner made a pair of saves on shots by Benadon and junior Maeve Kenny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen). Later in the quarter, Maguire denied consecutive shots off an Arcadia penalty corner to keep the game scoreless. Both teams had their chances in the fourth quarter, but the game would remain deadlocked at zero at the end of 60 minutes.
The Royals had five penalty corners within the first two minutes of the overtime period and freshman Lauren Franco (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) had a shot turned away by Fenner and a shot roll just wide before Benadon found the game-winner.
Head coach Colleen Moyer's squad held a 20-9 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal, while also holding an 11-7 edge in penalty corners. Benadon led the visitors with six shots on the afternoon and sophomore Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) added five.
Maguire tallied six saves in her second shutout in as many starts for the Royals and Fenner made nine saves for the Knights.
The University of Scranton field hockey team returns home to host Marywood in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Weiss Field at 7 p.m.
