DALLAS, Pa. - For the second time in less than a week, The University of Scranton field hockey team won a road match in overtime, as this time sophomore Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) played hero, scoring the game-winner in the 64th minute to lift the Royals to a 2-1 win over Misericordia Friday night.
With the win, the Royals remained unbeaten at 4-0, marking the third time in five seasons that Scranton has started the season with four straight victories. Misericordia dropped to 1-4 with the tough defeat.
To start on Friday night, however, the Cougars pounced on the Royals, as they outshot Scranton by a wide 11-1 margin in the first half. Despite the best efforts of junior goalie Clare Maguire (Oreland, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy), who made four saves in the half, Misericordia was first to strike in the 20th minute, as Lily Metress scored to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
That lead held through intermission and out of the break, it was Scranton who became the aggressor on offense.
In the 43rd minute, the Royals finally got on the board, as junior Marissa Campbell (Sunbury, Pa./Line Mountain) scored, unassisted to tie the match up at 1-1. For Campbell, it was the first goal of her career at Scranton.
The game remained tied throughout the rest of regulation, as the fourth quarter saw each team only take one shot, apiece. But, Scranton quickly came out in the first overtime period and put away Misericordia, firing five shots in four minutes.
The sixth and final shot of the extra period was the last, as Redding knocked home a deflected shot into the back of the goal to give the Royals the win. For Redding, it was her second goal of the year and the first game-winner of her short Scranton career, as well.
Overall, Scranton went on to outshoot Misericordia, 14-13, as the Royals held a sizeable 13-2 edge on shots in the second half and overtime of the match. Misericordia, meanwhile, held a big 11-5 edge on penalty corners.
In net, freshman Gianna Travia (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) relieved Maguire late in the first half and picked up the first win of her career at Scranton, making one save in the final 43 minutes of regulation.
The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Sunday, when they travel to Muhlenberg for another non-conference road match. Things get underway at 3 p.m.
