SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Sophomore Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) notched a hat trick, scoring three goals on the afternoon to lift The University of Scranton field hockey team to an impressive 3-0 win over 17th-ranked Susquehanna on Saturday in Landmark Conference action.
With the win, Scranton continued an outstanding start, moving to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the Landmark. Susquehanna fell to 6-1 and 0-1 in the Landmark with the loss.
In a match-up between two undefeated squads (and a rematch of the 2019 Landmark title game), both teams didn't do much on the offensive end in the first quarter of the contest, as it was scoreless after one.
But, right from the start in the second quarter, Redding and the Royals began to take control. First, in the 16th minute, Redding buried a chance, unassisted, to give Scranton the early 1-0 edge. Then, a mere five minutes later, Redding put the Royals up (for good) at 2-0 after converting a penalty stroke.
The 2-0 lead held for Scranton into intermission, as a strong Royals defense held the River Hawks to just two shots in the first half.
With a two-goal cushion, the Royals put the River Hawks away for the afternoon in the third quarter, as Redding scored her third goal of the day and seventh of the year in the 37th minute. Fellow sophomoreElle Collins (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) was credited with an assist on the play, the first of her Scranton career.
From there, the Royals coasted, riding a strong defensive effort to pitch a shutout, their seventh of the year. Scranton has now not allowed a goal in three straight games, six of seven contests on the year, and allowed just one goal the entire season, so far (which was a first half tally by Misericordia on Sept. 17).
Overall, both Scranton and Susquehanna fired six shots, apiece, with the River Hawks holding an 11-4 edge on penalty corners. In between the pipes, junior Clare Maguire (Oreland, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) notched a shutout victory, making five saves in the impressive win for the Royals.
The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Tuesday, as they travel to Albright for a non-conference road match. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
