Box Score TOWSON, Md. – The University of Scranton women's basketball team (12-2, 4-0 Landmark) forced 17 Goucher turnovers and limited the Gophers (1-11, 0-4 Landmark) to 26.1% shooting from the floor in a 65-35 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Decker SRC Arena in Towson.
This marks the sixth straight win for the Lady Royals who also remain unbeaten all-time against Goucher in 28 meetings.
Scranton was able to put together a dominant first half in the victory as they held a 5-3 lead in the early stages of the game before senior Emily Shurina (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) buried a three to kickstart a 12-0 run and stretch the lead to double digits. The Lady Royals held a 19-5 lead after one and started the second quarter on a separate 11-0 spurt as a three-point play from graduate student Abby Anderson (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) made it a 30-5 advantage with 2:16 to play in the first half. Head coach Nick DiPillo's squad eventually took a 34-7 lead into the locker room.
In the afore-mentioned first half, the Lady Royals were able to force 12 of the Gophers' 17 turnovers and held the hosts to 2-of-18 shooting (11.1%) from the floor.
The two teams traded baskets for a majority of the third quarter and Scranton led 43-24 at the 2:16 mark before they scored the final nine points for a 52-24 lead after three. Goucher was unable to get any closer the rest of the way and sophomore Maddie Hartnett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored eight points in the final stanza for the 65-35 victory.
Anderson led the Lady Royals with 15 points and nine rebounds on the afternoon and was joined in double figures by junior Hannah Angelini (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) with 12 points and 11 apiece from Hartnett and Shurina.
Angelini has scored in double figures in three of her last four games and is averaging 11.8 points per game during that stretch.
As a whole, nine different players scored points on the day for Scranton.
Briyah Haggins paced the Gophers with 10 points in the setback.
The Lady Royals shot 37.9% (22-of-58) from the floor in the win and 30.0% (9-of-30) from three-point range, while limiting Goucher to the 12-of-46 (26.1%) clip from the field and 20.0% (3-of-15) from deep. Scranton held a 43-30 edge in the rebounding battle led by Anderson's nine caroms and seven by junior Sara Walsh (Havertown, Pa./Haverford).
The University of Scranton women's basketball team returns home to host Salisbury in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon with opening tip in the John Long Center slated for 2 p.m.
