Big Fourth Quarter Carries Women's Lacrosse Past Mary Washington in 11-10 Thriller

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Four different players scored two goals apiece and The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team (2-4) scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter in an 11-10 victory over the Mary Washington Eagles (3-3) on Saturday afternoon at The Battleground Athletic Complex in Fredericksburg.

This marked the first ever meeting between the two programs.

The Royals trailed 9-8 entering the fourth quarter, but were able to rally and freshman Allie Halfpenny (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) tallied the go-ahead goal with 6:54 to play that made it a 10-9 game at the time. A minute and a half earlier, fellow freshman Grace Lane (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) had tied the game at nine apiece to set the stage for Halfpenny's goal.

Senior Jaclyn McCusker (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) added an insurance goal with 2:26 remaining to stretch the lead to 11-9 before Mary Washington got one back in the final minute.

The Eagles led 3-2 after one quarter and stretched the lead to 6-2 with a three goal run early in the second quarter, but goals from sophomores Erin Reich (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and Devyn Tanajewski (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) in the final four minutes brought the Royals within a pair at halftime.

Reich struck again just over 90 seconds into the third quarter and senior Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) evened things at six apiece with a goal off a feed from Halfpenny with 8:27 to play in the third quarter. Things were once again tied at seven before two straight tallies from Mary Washington made it a 9-7 game before Scranton's afore-mentioned rally that began with a goal from Lane in the final seconds of the third quarter.

The quartet of Halfpenny, Lane, Reich and Tanajewski had two goals apiece to lead the way offensively for head coach Chrissy Trescavage's team, while Conklin, McCusker and sophomore Kayleigh Stalter (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) added a goal apiece.

Tanajewski registered four caused turnovers to pace Scranton as Stalter and senior Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J./Morris Catholic) added two apiece. In goal for the Royals, sophomore Lauren Boldis (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) was credited with four saves to notch her second win of the season.

Katie Blair had five goals to lead Mary Washington in the setback.

The Royals are back in action on Wednesday night at Rowan with opening draw slated for 6 p.m.
