Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. – Junior Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) scored a pair of goals just under three minutes apart in the third quarter and The University of Scranton field hockey team (6-0, 1-0 Landmark) remained unbeaten with a 2-1 victory over the Catholic University Cardinals (3-5, 0-1 Landmark) in a 2021 Landmark Championship game rematch on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.
Redding scored in the 39th and 42nd minutes to register her third multi-goal game of the season and sixth of her career.
This also marks the Royals' fifth straight win against Catholic dating back to the 2018 season.
Scranton had a series of chances in the first quarter with three penalty corners and four shots, but things remained scoreless at the end of one. Sophomore Reagan Dolan (Broomall, Pa./Bonner & Prendergast) nearly gave the Royals the lead in the 17th minute when Catholic goalie Abigail Kearney made a save and added another save in the 21st minute on Dolan to keep things at 0-0 for the time being. As a whole, Kearney tallied four saves in the quarter and the zero all deadlock remained at halftime.
In the 39th minute, the Royals broke through following a penalty corner when senior Marissa Campbell (Sunbury, Pa./Line Mountain) fed Redding on the far edge of the circle and blasted a shot past Kearney for a 1-0 lead. Just 2:47 later, junior Cori Davis (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) found Redding with a pass into the circle and the Havertown, Pa., beat Kearney for her second goal of the day.
Redding leads the Landmark with eight goals on the year, a total that is also tied for 10th in all of Division III.
Senior goalie Clare Maguire (Oreland, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) came up big for the hosts in the fourth quarter as she recorded three saves in a span of 2:04 to keep it a 2-0 game temporarily. However, Catholic was able to strike for a goal in the 56th minute as Niki Micciche found the back of the cage, but the Royals would hold Catholic without a shot over the final four plus minutes to seal the victory.
Scranton held a 14-9 shot advantage in the contest led by five from Redding and four apiece from Dolan and junior Bridget Abraldes (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East).
Maguire earned the victory for the Royals with four saves, while Kearny recorded five saves for the Cardinals in the setback.
The Royals will host Ithaca in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at Weiss Field with action getting underway at 7:30 p.m.
