Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. – The No. 3 University of Scranton women's basketball team (25-0, 14-0 Landmark) closed the game on a 30-5 run over the final 12:52 and closed out an unbeaten regular season with a 70-45 victory over the Juniata College Eagles (7-18, 2-12 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at the John Long Center in Scranton.
This marks the first unbeaten regular season for the Lady Royals since going 25-0 in 2015-16.
Freshman Kaci Kranson (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) broke a 40-all tie with a three from the wing at the 2:52 mark of the third quarter and Juniata was limited to just five points the rest of the way as Scranton also completed a second consecutive perfect Landmark campaign.
Scranton is the top seed in this week's Landmark Conference Tournament and will host No. 4 seed Moravian in semifinal action on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. No. 2 Elizabethtown and No. 3 Catholic will do battle in Wednesday's other semifinal.
The Eagles grabbed an early 15-8 lead on Saturday before graduate student Sam Rajza (Plains, Pa./Holy Redeemer) hit a three to ignite a 9-2 run over the remainder of the first quarter and a layup by Kranson in the final seconds tied things at 17 apiece after one. Kranson opened the scoring in the second quarter with a three-point play, which began a 14-2 run and sophomore Jenna Larrabee (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) hit a layup to cap things off for a 31-19 lead with 5:10 left. The Lady Royals later took a 36-24 lead into the locker room.
Kranson followed her afore-mentioned three in the third quarter with a layup as part of the 30-5 run and Scranton held a 47-41 edge after three after senior Bridget Monaghan (Florham Park, N.J./Morristown-Beard) hit a layup just before the buzzer. In the fourth quarter, fellow senior Hannah Angelini (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) grabbed an offensive rebound and sank the ensuing layup to make it 49-41 and fuel a 17-0 run over the next four plus minutes as a Larrabee jumper extended the lead to 66-41 with 3:03 to play. Five different players scored during the course of the decisive run and Kranson had six points in that stretch, while Angelini had five to help the hosts preserve the 70-45 victory.
The Lady Royals held Juniata to just four points on 2-of-12 shooting in the quarter and also forced six turnovers.
Kranson led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting and also added a game-high eight rebounds. Elsewhere for Scranton, Monaghan had 15 points and four assists, Larrabee added a career-high nine points on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with six rebounds and Angelini tallied seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Kynnedy Miller hit four threes on the day and paced Juniata with 15 points.
Scranton was 29-of-66 (43.9%) from the floor and 37.5% (6-of-16) from deep, while the Eagles shot 35.8% (19-of-53) and 25.0% (6-of-24) from long range.
Head coach Ben O'Brien's team also held a 43-30 edge on the glass including 14 offensive rebounds.
Prior to the game, the senior class of Angelini, Monaghan, Rajza, Emma Duerr (Long Valley, N.J./Morris Catholic), Kyra Quigley (Drexel Hill, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr), Sara Walsh (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and student manager Molly Boyd were honored for their contributions and dedication to the program.
