SWARTHMORE, PA — The University of Scranton women's volleyball team split a pair of matches against Stockton University and Swarthmore College to cap off a 2-1 weekend road trip.
Match #1 (L, 1-3 vs Stockton)
The Royals started match strong, taking the first set (25-21), but Stockton responded by winning three straight sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-16) to take the match 3-1.
Senior Deanna Whelpley led the Royals with 18 kills, while sophomore Danielle Kramer and freshman Adria Vargas each chipped in 13 kills. Junior Cammi Quirk led the match with 44 assists, and senior Camryn Hoffman tallied a game-high 22 digs.
Scranton came out of the gate strong, winning nine of the last 10 points in the first set to take a 1-0 series lead. Stockton, however, responded with three straight set wins. The Ospreys hit an impressive .308 to win the fourth set, 25-16, snapping the Royals seven-game winning streak.
Match #2 (W, 3-0 vs Swarthmore)
In the nightcap, the Royals bounced back with a convincing 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-21, 25-19) over Swarthmore. This was the team's third 3-0 sweep of the season.
Whelpley turned in a standout performance with a match-high 15 kills, while Kramer added nine more. Quirk continued lead the Royals' offense with 31 assists. On the defensive end, Quirk lead the team with 14 digs, and Hoffman added 12 digs of her own.
Scranton took the first in a battle, winning the last three points after falling behind 23-22, and followed that up with a convincing win in the second set where team recorded a .323 hitting percentage. The Royals finished off the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third set.
