For the third time this season, senior outside hitter Deanna Whelpley of The University of Scranton women's volleyball team has been named the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, following another dominant showing during a 2–1 weekend for the Royals.
Whelpley was a consistent force on the attack, totaling 47 kills over 12 sets while averaging 3.92 kills per set and hitting .200 on 141 total swings. She helped lead Scranton to straight-set victories over Suffolk and Swarthmore, while also turning in a strong performance in a hard-fought 3–1 loss to Stockton.
The weekend began with a 14-kill outing in a sweep of Suffolk on Friday night at the John Long Center, where she hit .233 and paced the Royals' offense. On Saturday, she led all hitters with 18 kills against Stockton before adding 15 more in a bounce-back sweep of Swarthmore later that afternoon.
Whelpley also chipped in 9 digs, 2 total blocks, and committed just 1 reception error across the three matches, continuing to lead Scranton on both ends of the court.
The women's volleyball team returns to the John Long Center on Friday against Lycoming College at 7:00 PM in Landmark Conference action.
