HAVERFORD, PA – The University of Scranton women's volleyball team opened Saturday at the Haverford Invitational with a dominant win over Springfield College before dropping a hard-fought five-set thriller to host Haverford College at Gooding '84 Arena.
Match #1 (W, 3-0 vs. Springfield)
The Royals started the day strong, sweeping Springfield College in three straight sets (25-18, 25-21, 25-18) for their second win of the season.
Senior Deanna Whelpley and sophomore Danielle Kramer each chipped in nine kills. Junior Cammi Quirk set the tone with 25 assists, and senior Gwen Koester delivered a career-best six blocks at the net.
Scranton controlled the pace from the start, hitting .263 as a team to take the opening set. The Royals kept their momentum in the second, using strong serving and steady defense to stay in front. The final frame proved the tightest of the three, but Scranton's balanced attack and presence at the net sealed the sweep.
Whelpley anchored the back row with 10 digs, while senior Camryn Hoffman and Quirk each added seven.
Match #2 (L, 2–3 vs. Haverford)
The Royals battled host Haverford College in a five-set thriller, falling just short by a score of (25–20, 20–25, 24–26, 25–22, 22–20).
Whelpley powered the offense with a team-high 18 kills, while freshman Lauren Angelucci added 12 and Kramer chipped in nine. Quirk directed the attack with 51 assists and contributed 12 digs, three aces, and four blocks for a standout all-around performance. Koester and Kramer each posted five blocks, while Hoffman anchored the back row with 28 digs.
The Royals hit .165 as a team and tallied 10 total blocks while holding Haverford to a .177 attack percentage. Despite the narrow loss, Scranton showed resilience and balance on both sides of the ball in their longest match of the season so far.
