Interview Conducted by Athletic Communications Intern Nevaeh Wall
Royal Reflection shines a light on the senior student-athletes who embody what it means to be a Royal. In this edition, we feature
Haley Kenny of The University of Scranton women's tennis team as she reflects on the moments that defined her time as a Royal.
Favorite Scranton memory?
- One of my favorite Scranton memories is be elected captain of my team this year. It has been such an honor to help lead an amazing group of girls.
One lesson Scranton athletics taught you?
- One of the best lessons I have been taught from Scranton athletics is time management. Balancing classes, tennis and social life has helped me be more organized, learn to enjoy busy days and prepared me for the future.
Pregame or pre-competition ritual you'll miss most?
- I will miss stretching with my teammates at practice and matches.
Teammate who made the biggest impact on you?
- Each teammate I have had during my 3 years on this team have made such an incredible impact on me. The first that comes to my mind is my co-captain and best friend Nora Pencek. Although she is younger than me, she is one of my biggest role models and an incredible leader. We have worked so well together as captains and if I had to talk to someone for days straight without running out of things to say I would choose Nora. Nora has taught me to be more selfless, confident, and positive. There is no better hype women, listener or friend in the world than Nora Penck. I will miss her and all of my Scranton Tennis sisters so much.
Best advice you've received during your career?
- My coach Janice Winslow has given me countless great pieces of advice. One of which was when you are going through a hard time, lean on others for support. This program would be nothing with Janice and her decision. I feel blessed to even know her let alone have been a member of her team. I will miss her so much.
What does being a Royal mean to you?
- Being a Royal means, I have had the privilege of being a part of something bigger than myself, meet amazing people I may not know otherwise and leave The University a better version of myself than I ever imagined possible.
What are you most proud of from your time at Scranton?
- I am most proud of my development as a person. I came to Scranton too nervous to try out of any team and when I realized how much I missed tennis and being a part of a team I chose to tryout Sophomore year. I am leaving Scranton with a different degree I expect to get and a different outlook on life and D3 athletics.
What's next after graduation?
- After graduating with a degree in Journalism and Electronic Media I will be moving home to Vestal, NY. I am currently in the search for a job.
What surprised you most about yourself this past season?
- What surprised me most about myself this past season is my emotions about it being my last. I am a very emotional person and knew I'd be sad to leave but I have spent the last few weeks really trying to take in each moment at the University and with my teammates.
How do you hope to be remembered by your coaches and your teammates?
- I hope my teammates and coaches remember me as someone who is grateful. Being on this team gave me so much and I will forever be thankful for it. I also hope to be remembered as a positive member of the Scranton tennis family, and my teammates continue to remind themselves how lucky we all are to able to compete at this level for a school we love.
