The top-seeded University of Scranton women's tennis came up just short in a tightly contested Landmark Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 to No. 2 seed Moravian University at the Central PA Tennis Center in Williamsport.
Moravian opened the match by sweeping doubles play. Sydney Shifman and Natalia Smith earned a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while Kaelyn Balko and Jenna Gower followed with a 6-1 victory at No. 3. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Sarah Crawford and Gisele Falzone was left unfinished with Moravian leading 4-2, giving the Greyhounds the early 1-0 advantage.
Scranton responded strongly in singles competition to surge in front. Crawford delivered a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, and Falzone followed with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 2 to even the match at 2-2. Kyleigh McNulty then pushed Scranton ahead with a resilient three-set win at No. 6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Moravian answered with a late push, earning straight-set wins at No. 3 from Natalia Smith (6-1, 6-2) and at No. 5 from Kaelyn Balko (6-0, 6-1) to move within a point of the championship.
The title was ultimately decided at No. 4 singles, where Sydney Shifman edged Hannah Rowan 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 in the final match of the day to secure the championship for Moravian.
Despite the setback, Scranton finished the season 13-4, marking the program's highest win total since the 2017–18 campaign. The Royals once again reached the Landmark Conference Championship match, continuing their run among the league's top programs.
