Fords Spoil Royal Season Opener Wednesday At Fitzpatrick Field

SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton ran into a one-person wrecking crew in Haverford junior midfielder Josie Ferri (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) in its season opener Wednesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

Ferri scored six of her game-high seven goals in the second half as the Fords broke away from a 3-3 tie at intermission on their way to a 10-4 victory.

Haverford, now 2-0, also received a goal and an assist from freshman attacker Megan Gallagher (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) and a goal apiece from sophomore midfielder Perrin Downing (Greenville, Del./Wilmington Friends) and junior attacker Alexsa Pesce (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa).

Senior attacker Caroline Pryor (Robbinsville, N.J./Notre Dame), sophomore attackers Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and Kaitlin Lazorko (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy), and sophomore midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) scored a goal apiece for the Royals, now 0-1.

Scranton overcame a 3-1 deficit late in the first half to knot it up at intermission, as Pryor scored a goal off of a play set up by first-year attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, N.Y./Shore Regional) in the 20th minute and DePaolera added an unassisted goal with just 25 seconds remaining before halftime.

That's when Ferri took over.

She scored twice within a three-minute span to open the second half and followed with two more after Gallagher converted a free position shot in the 37th minute to give the Fords an 8-3 lead with just 10 minutes remaining.

Scranton ended a 21-minute scoring draught in the 51st minute when Lazorko converted a free position shot for a goal.

Ferri then put an end to the Royals' momentum with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute and by converting a free position shot for a goal with just three seconds left in the contest.

In two games, Ferri now has 14 goals.

Defensively, the Royals got a solid effort from sophomore goalie Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood), who turned away a game-high 10 shots.  Scranton also caused 14 turnovers, including three by DePolera and two each by sophomore midfielder Jaclyn Calabrese (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), senior midfielder Kristin Pickell (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and first-year midfielder/defender Shannon Ginty (Mineola, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy).

Junior goalie Leah Hammerschlag (Brookville, N.Y./Jericho) had nine saves for Haverford.

The Fords held a 30-21 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in draw controls.

The Royals will begin a four-game road trip next Tuesday, March 8, against Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
