RIVERDALE, NY—University of Scranton sophomore wrestler
Shawn Flesche (Montville, NJ/Montville
Township) captured the 165-pound title at the College of
Mount St. Vincent Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Flesche won all three of his matches to improve to 10-6 on the
season and 26-22 in his career. He opened the tournament with
a 7-2 win over Nick Jordan of Monroe Community College, then downed
Gnoleba Seri of Ursinus, 4-2, in the semifinals. He took home
the title with a 9-8 decision against Cameron Fine of Waynesburg in
the finals.
Freshman Eric Calimano (Randolph, NJ/Randolph)
and juniors Joseph Weitemeyer (Damsite, NY/Smithtown West)
and Ryan Giovanetti (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood)
finished in the top six in their respective weight classes for the
Royals.
Calimano placed fourth at 285 pounds, going 3-2 in his first
matches in a Scranton uniform. After dropping his opening
match, he came back to defeat teammate and fellow freshman
Sal Montouri (Clark, NJ/Arthur Johnson
Regional), 3-2, and Chris Raub of Monroe Community
College, 5-4. He was pinned in the third-place match by Marty
Kisla of Waynesburg at the 2:04 mark of the first period.
Weitemeyer placed fifth at 174. He lost by tech. fall in his
first match, but came back to defeat Tim Curtin-White of
Bridgewater State, 2-1. He was pinned in his final match of
the day by Gabriel Gordan of Ursinus at the 3:56 mark of the second
period.
Giovanetti went 3-3 to place sixth at 149. His wins came
against Matt Eulau of Ursinus, 8-5, Brian
Walsh (Chicago, Ill/St. Ignatius Preparatory) of
Scranton, 8-5, and Giancarlo of Morrele of Ursinus, 7-4.
Giovanetti is now 5-7 on the season.
