NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore Shawn Flesche (Northvale, N.J./Northern Valley
Regional) captured the 165-pound title to lead The
University of Scranton wrestling team to a third-place finish at
The Builder Invitational at The Apprentice School on Saturday.
The Royals, who finished with 44.5 points, also received a
third-place finish from junior Joseph Weitemeyer (Damsite, N.Y./Smithtown
West) at 174, and fourth-place finishes from freshman
Corey Forlenza (Montville, N.J./Montville
Township) at 125 and junior Chris Silakoski (Trenton, N.J./Notre Dame) at
197.
Flesche won his second straight invitational by posting three
wins. After an opening-round bye, he pinned Ferrum's Eddie
Isherwood in 1:27. In the semifinals, he edged Marion Military
Institute's Shaquille Bell, 2-0. Flesche then outpointed
Marion's Scott Varner, 12-10, to win the title.
Flesche also won the title at the College of Mount St. Vincent
Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19. He is now 11-6 on the season and
27-22 for his career.
Weitemeyer finished third at 174 pounds by pinning
Bridgewater's Scott Fike in 5:38 in a second-round match
after earning a first-round bye. Weitemeyer then lost in the
semifinals before rebounding to defeat Apprentice School's
C.W. Sorey, 4-2, in a consolation semifinal. He then edged Marion
Military Institute's Jesse Garrett, 5-3, to finish third.
Forlenza overcame an opening-round loss at 125 pounds by posting
a pair of consolation victories en route to finishing fourth. He
pinned Longwood University's Bill McGugan in 45 seconds, then
earned a technical fall over Bridgewater's A.J. Dobzeniecki,
16-0 in 4:20, to reach the third-place match. In that match,
Forlenza dropped a hard-fought 11-8 decision to The Apprentice
School's Jacob Michael.
Silakoski also overcame an opening-round loss to finish fourth
at 197 pounds. After a consolation bye, he advanced past Apprentice
School's Luke Hanson when Hanson was disqualified. Silakoski
then dropped a narrow 6-4 decision to St. Andrews
University's Jared Key in the third-place match.
Scranton picked up an opening round win from freshman Sal Montuori (Clark, N.J./Arthur Johnson
Regional) when he earned a major decision, 15-3, over
Bridgewater's Daniel Siler. Freshman Eric
Calimano (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) also earned an
opening-round victory at 285, pinning Ferrum's Deion Pressley
in 4:20.
The Royals also received a second-round victory at 149 from
sophomore Kevin Guenther (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley
Regional), who pinned West Virginia University Institute
of Technology's Steve Hurt in 2:42 after picking up an
opening-round bye.
Junior Robert Leavy (Bronx, N.Y./Iona Preparatory)
defeated William & Mary's Gavin Oplinger, 5-4, in a
consolation match.
The Apprentice School took the team title with 97 points, edging
Marion Military Institute, which finished with 85 points.
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when the
Royals travel to New York, N.Y. to face Yeshiva University at 8
p.m.
