SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton wrestling team
celebrated Senior/Alumni Day in style with a 32-12 victory over the
College of Mount St. Vincent Sunday afternoon at the Long
Center.
The Royals won their second straight match to improve to 4-8 on
the season. Scranton will get some time off to rest and heal
any nagging injuries before finishing the year at the 2013 NCAA
East regional to be staged at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania, on Saturday, March 2.
Sophomore Shawn Flesche (Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley
Regional) and freshman Eric
Calimano (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) each picked up a win
by pin today for the Royals. Flesche earned his 33rd career
victory and improved to 16-6 on the season by pinning Dan Matrazzo
at the 4:06 mark of the second period in the 165-pound weight
class. Calimano is now 8-4 on the year due to his pin of
Victor Vasquez 55 seconds into the first period of their match at
285.
The Royals also picked up wins by juniors Joseph Weitemeyer (Damsite, NY/Smithtown West)
and Chris Silakoski (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame).
Weitemeyer used a 1:18 advantage in riding time to pull out a 3-2
decision over Adeshola Logunleko at 174 to earn his sixth win,
while Silakoski dominated Karl Schmitt at 197, recording a 17-1
technical fall. Silakoski’s victory was the 40th of his
career and the 13th of the season. He is now five wins shy of
moving into the top 17 all-time in Scranton history.
Prior to the match, seniors Josh
Javitz (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and
Stephen Kaiser (Stewart Manor,
NY/Chaminade) were honored for their years of service to
the program. Both wrestlers are three-year lettermen.
