SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton women’s
lacrosse team fought back from a 5-0 deficit, only to drop a 12-9
decision to Haverford College in Cindy
Wilson’s debut as Royal head coach Saturday
afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
Senior midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) and
junior attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional)
led the Royals with three goals apiece and senior attacker
Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) finished with a goal and an assist.
Scranton also received a goal apiece from sophomore midfielder
Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) and
junior midfielder Shannon Ginty (Mineola, NY/Sacred Heart
Academy) and an assist from junior attacker Christine Dredger (Glen Head, NY/Our Lady of Mercy
Academy).
Haverford, which improved to 2-0 on the season, received two
goals apiece from sophomore midfielder Diana Perry (Bethesda,
Md./Milton Academy-Mass.), sophomore attacker Hannah Morgan
(Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), senior attacker Kenny Likes (Monkton,
Md./Roland Park Country School), and freshman attacker Elyse Adler
(San Mateo, Calif./Menlo School).
Trailing 5-0 after the first nine minutes of play, DePaolera and
Sullivan combined for five goals during a 7-1 rally over a
17-minute span that rejuvenated the Royals and gave them their
first lead, 7-6, with three minutes remaining before
intermission. After the Fords’ Christina Gould
(Newtown, Conn./Academy of Our Lady of Mercy) tied it up at 7 by
halftime, the Royals would manage just two goals the rest of the
way.
Adler opened the second-half scoring by converting a
free-position shot into a goal before Sullivan tied it up for the
last time on a play set up by Dredger in the 49th
minute. The Fords then locked it up with a 4-1 run in the
final 10 minutes of play.
Haverford held a 27-18 advantage in shots.
Senior goalkeeper Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood)
made a game-high nine saves for Scranton while sophomore Margaret
Perkoff (Millburn, NJ/Millburn) replaced starter Megan Chenworth
(Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) at halftime and made three saves to
pick up the victory.
The Royals will return to action next Saturday, March 9, against
Lebanon Valley College at 1:00 p.m. in Annville, Pennsylvania.
