SCRANTON, Pa.—Senior attacker Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) scored a game-high five goals, including the 100th
of her career, to lead The University of Scranton to an 18-8
victory over Drew University in the Landmark Conference
regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at
Fitzpatrick Field.
Junior attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional)
and sophomore midfielder Emily
Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) added four goals
apiece and senior attacker Kaitlin Lazorko (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth
Academy) finished with five assists as the Royals won
their third straight game to improve to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the
Landmark Conference.
With the win, Scranton wraps up the number three seed in the
Landmark tournament and will play five-time defending champion
Catholic University Wednesday, May 1, in semifinal action in
Washington, DC. Earlier this year, the Royals lost a
heart-breaking 17-16 decision to the Cardinals in the
nation’s capital.
Behind three goals by Goss and two by Giorno, the Royals erased an
early 2-1 deficit and built up an 11-5 halftime lead that was never
seriously challenged by the Rangers in the second half. With
the loss, Drew falls to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in the
conference. The Rangers are now the number four seed and will
take on top-seeded and nationally-ranked Susquehanna University in
the other semifinal game Wednesday in Selinsgrove,
Pennsylvania.
Scranton also received two goals from senior midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon),
and a goal apiece from junior midfielder Shannon Ginty (Mineola, NY/Sacred Heart
Academy), senior defender Shannon Howe (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River),
and freshman attacker Bridget Gallaher (Toms River, NJ/Toms River
East).
Defensively, the Royal backline of seniors Kristen Gieschen (Boonton, NJ/Mountain Lakes)
and Jaclyn Calabrese (Smithtown,
NY/Smithtown-East) played a key role in today’s win,
shutting down the shooting lanes and allowing only 12
shots-on-goal, four of which were saved by senior goalkeeper
Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop
Wood).
The Royals held a commanding 35-16 advantage in shots and a 30-20
margin in ground balls.
Giorno scored the 100th goal of her career in the 19th minute of
the first half, becoming one of only 10 players in Scranton history
to reach this milestone. She is now tied with DePaolera for
ninth place for most career goals with 103. In addition,
Giorno is fifth all-time in Scranton history for most career points
(174). Sullivan’s four goals today give her
123 for her career, the fifth most in Royals’ history.
