SCRANTON, Pa.—Sophomore midfielder Emily
Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) scored six of her
career-high seven goals in the first half to lead The University of
Scranton women’s lacrosse team to a 12-6 victory over Goucher
College in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon at
Fitzpatrick Field.
Senior midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon)
added two goals and an assist and senior attackers Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) and Kaitlin Lazorko (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth
Academy) each finished with a goal and an assist as the
Royals won their second straight game to improve to 6-3 overall and
1-1 in the conference.
Goucher, which fell to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in the Landmark, was led
by senior midfielder Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, NH/Portsmouth) with
three goals and sophomore attackers Rita Meissner (Yonkers,
NY/Yonkers) and Megan Meluskey (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and
sophomore midfielder Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver
School) chipped in a goal apiece.
Goss scored three times in the opening 18 minutes of play as the
Royals jumped out to a 6-0 lead en route to a 9-2 halftime
advantage. The Gophers did score twice to open the second
half to slice the lead to five, 9-4, before Lazorko scored her
third goal of the season, unassisted, to get Scranton back on
track. Each team traded two goals apiece the rest of the way
to set the final score.
The Royals also got a big lift from senior goalkeeper Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood),
who finished with nine saves, and from its back line of seniors
Shannon Howe (Pearl River, NY/Pearl
River), Kristen Dredger (Boonton,
NJ/Boonton), and Jaclyn Calabrese (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown
East), which did not allow Goucher’s high-scoring
due of Khin and junior midfielder Erin Reifsnyder (Austin,
Texas/St. Andrew’s Episcopal) to establish any type of
rhythm.
Junior attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional)
finished with a goal for Scranton, the 109th of her career and is
now tenth all-time on the Royals’ scoring chart with 134
total points. In addition, Smart picked up career win
number 26 and is now eight saves shy of recording 400 in her
career.
Goss’s effort today eclipses her previous career-high of six
goals against Neumann University on March 14 earlier this year.
The Royals will open a two-game road trip this Tuesday, April 9,
against Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, beginning at
4:00 p.m.
