SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton women’s
lacrosse team stood toe-to-toe with 12th-ranked Montclair State
University for 30 minutes Wednesday evening at Fitzpatrick
Field.
Then the Red Hawks flexed their muscles, dominating the second
half to pull away for a 16-5 victory.
Senior midfielder Kelly Schoneveld scored four of her game-high
six goals in the second half and junior attacker Tierney Conlon
(Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) finished with four goals and three assists
as Montclair State broke away from a 4-4 tie at intermission.
The Red Hawks, now 10-0, also received two goals apiece from
freshman midfielder Francesca Verrone (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive)
and freshman attacker Aviana Paraggio (Sewell, NJ/Washington
Township) and a goal and two assists from sophomore midfielder
Kasey Maguire (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee).
Freshman midfielder Meghan
Kerr (Warwick, NY/John S. Burke) led the Royals, now
2-5, with a goal and two assists and junior midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown), senior
attackers Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional)
and Erin Green (Merrick, NY/Sandford Calhoun), and freshman
midfielder Meaghan Ginty (Mineola, NY/Sacred Heart
Academy) scored a goal apiece.
The Royals got a big lift from junior goalkeeper Emily
Towey (Abington, Pa./Abington), who made six of her
eight saves in the first half as Scranton matched the Red Hawks
evenly in nearly every statistical categories.
In the second half, the Hawks held the Royals to only eight shot
attempts and scored 11 straight goals after Goss tied it up for the
final time with an unassisted goal with 25:02 remaining.
Montclair St. held a 33-24 advantage in shots and a 24-19 margin
in ground balls. The Red Hawks also got a 12-save effort from
freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Tepper (Flanders, NJ/Mount
Olive).
The Royals will travel to Washington, DC, this Saturday, April 5,
to take on Catholic University in Landmark Conference action
beginning at 3:00 p.m.
