ELMIRA, NY—Elmira College opened the second half with a 7-0
run to pull away from a 4-3 halftime lead en route to a 13-8
victory over The University of Scranton in non-conference
women’s lacrosse action Monday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Marissa Mongillo (Shelton, Conn./Trumbull) scored
three of her game-high five goals during the momentum-changing run
to help the Soaring Eagles improve to 6-11.
Elmira also received three goals and an assist from junior
midfielder Ashton Hogan (Shelburne, Ont./SUNY Plattsburgh), two
goals and an assist from senior attacker Sami Risi (Coopersburg,
Pa./Southern Lehigh), a goal and an assist from junior attacker
Natalie Robinson (Okotoks, Alberta/Foothills Composite), and a goal
apiece from freshman midfielder Kelsey Quail (Cortland,
NY/Cortland) and sophomore attacker Moorea Spoljaric (Saugerties,
NY/Saugerties).
The Royals, now 6-9, received two goals apiece from freshmen
Meghan Kerr (Warwick, NY/John S. Burke
Catholic) and Nikole Sullivan (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee),
junior Emily
Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown), and senior
Erin Green (Merrick, NY/Sandford Calhoun).
Falling behind 3-0 and 4-1 early, the Royals cut the margin to one
on back-to-back goals by Green late in the first half.
The Soaring Eagles dominated the opening 10 minutes of the second
half to build up an 11-3 lead before the Royals finally got back on
the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by Sullivan with 14:52
left. Sullivan’s goal ignited a 4-1 run that cut
Elmira’s lead to 12-7 with 8:11 left, but the Royals would
managed just one more goal the rest of the way.
Scranton junior goalkeeper Emily
Towey (Abington, Pa./Abington) made 10 saves while
LeAnna Presler (Livonia, NY/Livonia) finished with five for the
Soaring Eagles.
Elmira held a 31-18 advantage in shot attempts and a 26-19 margin
in ground balls. The Soaring Eagles also won 14 of the 23
draw controls.
The Royals will return to action this Wednesday, April 30, against
Catholic University in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference
tournament in Washington, DC, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
