SCRANTON, Pa. - It took a little while, but the University of Scranton field hockey team was able to break a scoreless tie late in the second half against Albright on Tuesday night, as the Royals got past the visiting Lions, 2-0, at Fitzpatrick Field in out-of-conference action.
With the win, Scranton went to 10-1 overall on the year, while Albright fell to 7-5 with the defeat.
For most of the match, both team were locked in a defensive slugfest.
In the first half, Albright held a 6-5 edge on shots over the Royals, but Scranton sophomore goalie Christina Black (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) made four saves in the period, keeping the Lions off the scoreboard in the process.
The second half saw Scranton control possession for much of the period, as they outshot Albright (7-4) and had more penalty corners (7-5).
However, it wasn't until under 10 minutes left in regulation that Scranton was finally able to crack the scoreless tie.
In the 61st minute, senior Krista Osborne (Blue Bell, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy) played a penalty corner to just inside the top of the scoring circle to fellow senior Jessica Pankey (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes), who fired a shot right into the back of the net to give Scranton the 1-0 lead.
The goal for Pankey was her fifth of the year, and the third game-winner of her career (second of the 2015 season).
After holding on defense over the final nine minutes, Scranton got one more chance to score with no time left in regulation off another corner.
There, Pankey played a pass off a corner to freshman Katherine McVeagh (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) who scored her second goal of the year to end the night on a high note for the Royals, giving them the two-goal victory.
Overall, Scranton ended the night outshooting Albright by a 12-10 margin. In between the pipes, Black notched her fifth shutout victory of the season, ending with five saves on the evening.
The University of Scranton field hockey team jumps back into Landmark Conference play on Saturday, as they host Goucher at Fitzpatrick Field. Things get underway at 1 p.m.
