BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) scored a career-high eight goals as The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team opened Landmark Conference play with a dominant performance in an 18-9 victory over Goucher on Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field.
Goss's eight goals were a career high, surpassing her previous high of seven set against Goucher on April 6, 2013. The eight goals are also tied for third-most in a game in Scranton history. Goss now has 17 goals this season and 152 for her career, moving her into fifth-place on the program's all-time list.
Also, the eight goals by Goss tie the most in a Landmark Conference women's lacrosse game, matching a feat that had been accomplished twice previously in the conference's eight seasons.
Scranton (3-5, 1-0 Landmark) also received three goals and two assists from junior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and three goals from freshman midfielder Dana Siepietowski (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area). Sophomore midfielder Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) had two goals and an assist, and fellow sophomore midfielder Nikole Sullivan (Sparkill, N.Y./Tappan Zee) had a pair of goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marne Rossetti (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) made six saves in goal and the Royals held a 38-17 edge in shots. Allen had a team-high six ground balls and Sullivan added three.
Scranton jumped out to a 3-1 lead after 10 minutes on goals by Sullivan, Allen and Goss, but Goucher (7-4, 1-2 Landmark) battled back to tie the game at three with a pair of goals 64 seconds apart. The Royals answered with four straight goals and seven of the next nine to take a 10-5 lead late in the half before the Gophers scored late to make it 10-6 at the break.
The Royals took total control by scoring the first six goals of the second half, including four by Goss.
Scranton is back in action on Thursday, April 2, when the Royals host Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference contest at 4 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
