SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton women’s lacrosse team overcame a 3-goal second-half deficit to pull out a dramatic 14-12 victory in overtime against Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action Thursday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
Senior midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) led the Royals with five goals, sophomore midfielders Meghan Kerr (Warwick, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) and Nikole Sullivan (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee) and freshman midfielder Erin Pfail (Garden City, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) and freshman attacker Morgan Windisch (Williston Park, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) added two apiece, and junior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) had four assists.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeperMarne Rosetti (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) made nine saves for Scranton, including two in the final seconds to send the game into overtime. With the win, the Royals improved to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Sophomore midfielder Kelcie Ehler (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) led the Crusaders, now 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the Landmark, with six goals, junior midfielderAnnie McElaney (Natick, Mass./Natick) added three, senior attacker Meredith Crane (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) had two goals and an assist, and freshman defender Brooke Burnett (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) tallied a goal.
The Crusaders turned a 5-4 halftime lead into a 10-7 advantage with less than 16 minutes remaining in the second half. Goss then scored twice, including the game-tying goal with 2:33 remaining in regulation, to key a 4-1 rally that tied it at 11.
Windisch scored both of her goals overtime, the first coming 16 seconds after Ehler gave Susquehanna its final lead of the game and the other with 1:10 remaining to set the final score. In between, Kerr gave the Royals their first lead since the 6:25 mark of the first period by scoring her 21st goal of the season on a play set up by Pfail.
Today’s win was the first by the Royals over Susquehanna since April 13, 2011.
With five goals today, Goss moved into seventh place on the Royals’ all-time scoring list with 168 total points (157 goals, 11 assists). She has scored 13 of her team-leading 22 goals in her last two games.
The Royals will return to action next Wednesday, April 8, against Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
