SCRANTON, Pa.—Early in the second half of today’s Landmark Conference regular-season finale at Fitzpatrick Field, The University of Scranton women’s lacrosse team entertained thoughts of upsetting 13th-ranked Catholic University.
Then the six-time Landmark champion Cardinals put it into another gearing, scoring eight unanswered goals to pull away from a 7-5 lead and cruised to a 17-6 victory.
With the win, Catholic improves to 12-3 overall and claims the top seed in the upcoming Landmark tournament with a 6-0 record. The loss drops the Royals to 6-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Freshman attacker Nicolette Crisalli (Silver Spring, Md./St. John’s College H.S.) led the Cardinals with six goals and an assist, sophomore midfielderAlexis Bosilovic (Gibsonia, Pa./Sewickley Academy) had four goals and an assist, senior attacker Linsday Brophy (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) scored three goals, and senior attacker Madeline Wilson (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) finished with two goals and two assists.
Scranton, which is now the number two seed in the upcoming Landmark tournament Wednesday and will host Susquehanna at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field, was led sophomore midfielder Meghan Kerr (Warwick, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) and freshman midfielder Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) with two goals apiece and junior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and senior midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) scored one apiece.
The Royals took an early 2-0 lead behind goals by Angelo and Allen in the first 10 minutes of the first half and led 3-2 on an unassisted goal by Kerr with 15:13 left before intermission, Bosilovic scored three times in the final 12 minutes as the Cardinals built up a 6-4 halftime lead.
The two teams traded goals early in the second half before Crisalli scored four times to ignite the game-breaking 8-0 run. For the game, Catholic held a 39-19 advantage in shots and a 32-20 margin in ground balls.
Royal sophomore goalkeeper Marne Rossetti (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) finished with a season-high 14 saves while her counterpart, Cardinal senior Tricia Pehnke (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North), stopped eight shots.
