WAYNE, N.J. – Seniors Alyssa Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) and Jessica Pankey (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) each scored goals and The University of Scranton field hockey team did not allow a shot on goal while staying unbeaten with a 2-0 win over William Paterson on Wednesday evening.
The Royals (3-0) allowed just four shots in the win, none of which challenged sophomore goalkeeper Christina Black (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy), who picked up her second shutout of the season and has now allowed just one goal in 236:25 this season.
Whitman wasted little time giving Scranton an advantage, scoring 3:43 into the game when she took a pass from senior forward Lara Haab (Gladwyne, Pa./Country Day School Sacred Heart) and scored from the top of the circle. It was Whitman's fourth goal of the season and 26th of her career, and she has now scored in all three games this year. Haab picked up her first assist.
The defense stymied William Paterson for the rest of a fairly even first half, as Scranton went into the break with a 3-2 edge in shots.
Pankey gave the Royals an insurance goal when she scored in the 49th minute by taking pass from senior forward Krista Osborne (Blue Bell, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) on a penalty corner and blasted home a shot for her second goal of the season and seventh of her career.
Scranton held William Paterson to just two second-half shots to finish with a 9-4 edge in shots as Pankey led the team with four. The Royals also had 12 penalty corners to five for the Pioneers.
Scranton is back in action on Sunday when the Royals travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on King's at 11 a.m.
