The University of Scranton wrestling team finished its home schedule on Sunday against a nationally ranked opponent. In the end, 25th-ranked College at Brockport was too much, as the Royals suffered a 29-12 defeat on Senior Day in the Long Center.
Prior to the start of the match, the Royals honored seniors Eric Calimano (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), Corey Forlenza (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) and Salvatore Montuori (Clark, N.J./Arthur Johnson Regional).
Once the match began, Brockport (7-0) showed why it's among the top teams in NCAA Division III by racing out to an 18-0 lead. The Royals (9-9) got back within striking distance thanks to decisions by junior Ian Evans (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) and freshman Andrew Gombas (Warren, N.J./Bound Brook), but never got closer than 15 before the match was decided.
Evans controlled his opponent for most of the match en route to a 7-4 decision. The victory improved Evans to 26-6 on the season and 87-16 for his career, which ranks him third on the school's all-time wins list.
Gombas pulled out a 6-4 victory at 174 pounds by avoiding a late takedown for Scranton's second win of the match. The win evened his record at 11-11 in his first collegiate season.
Scranton also received a forfeit victory at 197 in the match.
The Royals have completed the dual match portion of their schedule. The nine victories mark the most in a single season since the 2004-05 season, when Scranton went 10-9. The team now has two weeks to prepare for the NCAA East Regional on Sunday, Feb. 28, at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.
