ANNVILLE, Pa. -- Freshman Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored a match-high five goals, but it wasn't enough, as the University of Scranton women's lacrosse team could not come back from a halftime deficit at Lebanon Valley, dropping a 14-10 decision on the road Wednesday night.
With the loss, Scranton falls to 1-2 on the year, while LVC improved to 2-1 with the victory.
In the first half, LVC quickly got on the board, taking a 1-0 lead 30 seconds into the contest on a score. Scranton, however, quickly answered back about six minutes later, as junior Meghan Kerr (Warwick, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) scored the Royals' first goal of the night on a free position shot to tie the match up at 1-1.
Following another LVC goal with 22 minutes left, Gallo scored her first goal of the day with 18:55 left, unassisted, to tie the match back up at 2-2. LVC, however, went on a roll offensively to end the first half, scoring five unanswered goals to go up 7-2 at halftime.
After LVC added their sixth straight goal to open the second half and go up 8-2, freshman Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) finally ended the scoring drought for Scranton with a goal with 24 minutes left in regulation to make it an 8-3 match. However, LVC answered back with two more goals, extending their lead out to 10-3 over Scranton with 22 minutes left.
Kerr was able to get Scranton back on the board a minute later on another free position shot to make it 10-4, and following another LVC goal that made it 11-4, Gallo scored three straight goals over a three minute span to slice the LVC lead down to 11-7 with 11 minutes left.
But, LVC answered yet again, scoring three straight times on their own end to extinguish the Royals' comeback bid and take a 14-7 lead with 8:47 left.
Scranton, however, did not go out without a fight, as senior Erin Allen (Syosset, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) scored two goals in the final five minutes, including the game's final score with one second remaining in regulation.
Gallo added her fifth and final goal of the night in between Allen's goals (with 31 seconds left), meaning the freshman has now scored 10 goals in her first three matches in a Scranton uniform.
Overall, LVC and Scranton each fired 24 shots on the night, with Scranton holding a 16-12 edge on ground balls. The Royals also held a 10-8 edge on free position shots, as well.
Scranton will look to bounce back on Saturday, as they host Farmingdale State at Fitzpatrick Field in another out-of-conference match. Things get underway at 1 p.m.
