SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team started quickly and continued its strong play throughout the evening en route to a 20-10 victory over Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference semifinal on Wednesday at Sassafras Field.
The third-seeded Royals (11-6) advance to Saturday's Landmark Conference championship match against top-seeded Catholic, an 18-4 winner over Drew in Wednesday's other semifinal. Saturday's championship game will begin at 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
Scranton scored the first four goals of the game on Wednesday, withstood a late first-half surge by Susquehanna (8-9), then pulled away in the second half.
Freshman attacker Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) led the offensive attack with a career-high six goals, giving her 12 goals over the last four games. Sophomore attacker Morgan Windisch (Williston Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) added a career-high five goals, all in the second half.
Senior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) had two goals and an assist, and junior attacker Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) and freshman attacker Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had two goals each. Sophomore midfielder Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and freshman midfielder Christine Olert (Somers, N.Y./Katonah) both added a goal and an assist in the win.
Angelo continued her season-long dominance in the midfield, collecting 14 draw controls, one shy of matching her career high. Senior defender Bridget Gallaher (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) had an assist and a team-high five ground balls, and senior midfielder Fiona Keelan (New Rochelle, N.Y./Mamaroneck) had a team-high four caused turnovers.
Junior goalkeeper Marne Rossetti (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) finished with nine saves between the pipes, and the Royals finished with a 36-21 advantage in shots and converted on three of five free-position shots.
The appearance in the Landmark Conference championship is the first by the Royals in nine years in the conference. The team's last appearance in a conference championship came in 2004, when Scranton won the second of back-to-back Middle Atlantic Conference championships, the program's only two conference championships in 17 years of existence.
