BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the eighth consecutive season, the University of Scranton volleyball team will play in the Landmark Conference playoffs, as the Royals clinched a bid into the field after rolling past host Moravian (3-0) and Elizabethtown (3-1) on Saturday.
With the victories, the Royals are now 28-2 overall and 4-0 in the Landmark Conference. Winners of 16 of their last 17 games, Scranton has now won 28 games in a season for the first time since 1999, when the Royals finished the year with a 28-11 overall record.
Scranton 3, Moravian 0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-18) | Box Score
In their first match of the day against host Moravian, Scranton absolutely dominated play from the opening serve, as they did not trail in a set until early in the third game.
But, after falling behind 10-8 in that third set, the Royals rolled on a 10-3 run to go up 18-13 on Moravian and never look back in a seven-point win that clinched the three-set victory. The three-set victory was Scranton's third straight in Landmark Conference action, and the 17th of the year for the Royals, as well.
Overall in the win, junior Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) went into double-digits again in kills, finishing with 10 kills and six digs.
Sophomore Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had another strong match, finishing with nine kills, while freshman setter Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) ended with 29 assists. On defense, freshman Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) once again had 16 digs, marking the fourth time in five matches she posted exactly 16 digs overall.
Scranton 3, Elizabethtown 1 (25-19, 25-11, 19-25, 25-13) | Box Score
The Royals had their Landmark Conference set winning streak come to a close after opening a 2-0 lead on Elizabethtown in the nightcap (11 straight sets), but Scranton came back strong in a dominating fourth game to move to 4-0 in the Landmark with a four-set win.
Overall in the E-Town victory, Kirwan was a force on the attack, as she finished with 21 kills, marking the third time on the 2017 season she went into the 20s in the kill department. With her performance on the day, Kirwan is now fifth in program history in career kills with 1,231. Kirwan also finished the game with 11 digs to notch a double-double, as well.
Elsewhere, Norman finished with 37 assists, as she now has 905 assists for the year. Norman also had 12 digs in the win, while Schetroma ended the match with a match-high 22 digs.
Up front in the victory, Scranton was dominant, as senior Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y/Eastchester) finished the match with a team-high six block assiststs.
The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Penn State Berks inside the Long Center in their regular season home finale. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
