ALLENTOWN, Pa. - It was a hard-fought day for the University of Scranton volleyball team, as the Royals went the distance with both Muhlenberg and Stockton. Scranton dropped a tough five-setter in their first match of the day against Muhlenberg, then rallied for a five-set win over Stockton in the nightcap.
With the split, Scranton continues their sterling start to the year, moving to 12-1 overall.

In their first match of the day, Scranton dropped their first contest of the 2017 season, as the host Muhlenberg Mules roared back from a 2-0 deficit to knock off Scranton.
In the loss, sophomore Victoria Capogna (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led the attack, finishing with 12 kills, a match-high. Elsewhere, senior Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) had nine kills, while junior Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) had eight kills for the Royals.
Meanwhile, freshman Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) set up the Royals attack all match, finishing with 38 assists. On defense, freshman Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa. /Downingtown West) was impressive in a losing effort, finishing with 26 digs. Rentzheimer finished the match with 17 digs, to go over 1,000 digs for her career, as well.
Scranton 3, Stockton 2 (23-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 18-16) | Box Score
After a tough loss to Muhlenberg, Scranton came right back and battled with Stockton in another see-saw, five-set affair.
Down 2-1 entering the fourth set, Scranton sent the match to a decisive fifth game with a six-point win. In the fifth and final set, Scranton was staring a loss in the face after falling behind late, 16-15.
But, the Royals rallied, tallying the final three points of the match to surge ahead to a five-set win. With the match tied at 16-all, Norman and Kirwan had kills for the Royals to finish off the victory for Scranton.
Overall, junior Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) led the Scranton attack, finishing with 22 kills, while Kirwan ended the day with a 19-kill performance. Rentzheimer also pitched in with 10 kills. Meanwhile, Norman went over 50 in assists with 52 and led the defense with 19 digs, as well.
The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Friday, hosting John Jay (4 p.m.) and Marywood (8 p.m.) in a tri-match at the John Long Center.
