Women's Lacrosse Comes Up Just Short Against #23 Rowan

For the second time in as many games, The University of Scranton women's lacrosse went toe-to-toe with a nationally-ranked opponent only to fall just short as the Royals dropped a 13-11 decision to #23 Rowan on Tuesday night at Fitzpatrick Field.  

Rowan (6-1) built a 7-2 lead over the first 21:14 of Tuesday's contest before Scranton (5-5) scored the final four goals of the opening half before leveling the score at seven-apiece 33 ticks into the second stanza.

The Profs countered with a three-goal run to hold a 10-7 advantage with 23:21 left in regulation, but the Royals pushed back with the next two markers to pull to within one at the 19:37 mark.  The teams traded goals over the next nine and a half minutes before Rowan extended its lead to 13-10 with eight and a half minutes to play.

Scranton pull to within two goals with 6:30 showing on the clock, but were unable to pull any closer in the final minutes of the contest.

Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) paced Scranton (5-5) with four goals, Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) netted three goals, and Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) added three points on a goal and two assists.

Kaitlyn Murphy (Somers, N.Y./North Salem), Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), and Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) also scored the Royals in the loss.

Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) turned in a strong outing in net for Scranton, making a career-high 17 saves on the evening to go along with a team-high four ground balls.

Calabro collected a team-high five draw controls and had three ground balls while Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) picked up four draw controls while matching a game-high with three caused turnovers.

Maddie Bray scored a game-high five goals for Rowan (6-1) while Taylor Gretz added a hat trick to lead the Profs, who got 11 saves from Erin Horner in the victory.

Rowan held a slim, 37-34 edge in shots for the game and won the ground ball battle, 29-16.  The Profs also went 21-for-25 on clears to Scranton's 18-of-27 effort.  The Royals, who committed 24 turnovers to 19 for the visitors, claimed a 14-12 lead in draw controls on the evening.

Scranton will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. on Saturday to take on Moravian in a Landmark Conference tilt starting at 1:00 p.m.
