MADISON, N.J. - Junior Carah Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led The University of Scranton volleyball team's attack with seven kills, as the Royals won their 12th straight game overall with a 3-0 victory at Drew (25-19, 26-24, 25-12) Wednesday night in Landmark Conference action.
With the win, the Royals moved to 18-2 overall and 3-0 in the Landmark Conference, as Scranton has kicked off Landmark play with three straight 3-0 victories. Drew fell to 12-5 and 0-3 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In the very first match-up between the schools ever in volleyball, Scranton came out strong in the first set, opening a 21-16 lead late and never looking back in a six-point victory to take a 1-0 lead early. The second set, however, was anything but uneventful for Scranton.
It appeared the Royals were going to coast to a 2-0 lead in the match in the set, as they opened a 20-11 edge on the Rangers, But, Drew went on a tear to get back into the match, as a 12-2 scoring run put the Rangers in the lead at 23-22 late in play.
But, the Royals picked themselves up to take the win in the set. After taking the lead back at 24-23 and having Drew force a tiebreak at 24-24. Scranton put away the set with back-to-back points to take a two-point win. Finishing off the set for the Royals was sophomore Stephanie Margolies (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and senior Eryn Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Westridge School For Girls) who had back-to-back kills on the attack to clinch the win.
Up 2-0, Scranton put Drew away for the night in the third set, opening an insurmountable 18-7 lead and never looking back in a 13-point victory to complete the Landmark sweep of the Rangers.
Outside of Vitkus on the attack for the Royals, Boken finished with six kills, while also recording three service aces. Margolies had five kills and nine digs, while freshman Erin Keaveney (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) also had five kills. On defense, senior Molly Dunfee (King of Prussia, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) led the way with 10 digs, while junior Caileigh Cox (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) set up the attack all evening with 24 assists.
The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, as they travel to Brooklyn to take on 10th-ranked NYU at 10 a.m. and Arcadia (in a neutral site match) at 12:30 p.m.
